Community Nursery

The nursery is now open Wednesday 9am to 3pm and Saturday 10 to 2pm.   An affordable source for native plants on Banks Peninsula. Plants range in price from $2 to $10.

Our aim is to encourage biodiversity on Banks Peninsula. We propagate native trees and grasses that grow in the ecological area of the Mt Herbert and Akaroa District/ Banks Peninsula.  All our seed is sourced in these catchments.  If not its source is clearly stated.

The nursery is also involved with restoration planting projects and has supplied stock  in the past for The Okuti River Project, Caton’s Bay, Kaituna Quarry, Robinsons Bay, Silo Stay and continuous plantings along the Okana River.  There have also been major plantings on private land in the area.

As a nursery we provide a relaxed atmosphere where people can come and browse at their leisure, or join in for some companionable propagating and other activities.

LSCN had its beginnings in 2004.  It slowly grew from being run by 2 people to the present number of approximately 10.

In 2014 we moved to our present site behind the Little River Service Centre/Post Office.  The land is leased from the CCC.  The group formed a charitable trust in 2016.   Plans to develop the ‘back paddock’ behind the nursery into a native demonstration garden are under way as of 2020.

NATIVE PLANT COMPETITION – A new initiative of Living Streams Community Nursery is the Native Plant competition for projects based on Banks Peninsula. The competition is open to groups and individuals planning on native plant restoration projects. This may be for your garden or your school or Playcentre.  Entry is easy. You need to tell the judges what plants you’d like,  demonstrate how you’d use the plants, what protection they would receive and how you’d manage weed control. First prize is a $500 voucher from Living Streams Community Nursery- approx 100 plants. Second is $200 and 3rd $100.

The nursery trustees are encouraging anyone to enter with entries closing on 31 July. Winners will be announced in mid August so you can plant your prize in late winter or spring. The vouchers are valid for a  year if you’re not quite ready to plant.

Suggested information would include description of site and how you plan to manage the native plants (fencing/site preparation/weed control).

The competition is for planting anywhere on Banks Peninsula (provided you have approval to do so) and can be on private or public land, be individuals, groups or schools.

    Hi there,
do you have any kahikatea for sale? I am looking for 20 to 30 – ideally bigger than RX90 – to go into a site near Lincoln.

    Hi Annelies,
After 8 years waiting we are finally rebuilding in CHCH although we now live in Okains Bay. The house has corten cladding so I would like lancewoods that are toothed and sword like and not grow too big as they are in a plot rather than on the boundary.
I would like to order 20 lancewoods and 20 minature black flaxes. The house should be completed by May 2020.
I am not sure what procedure would suit you. We have space here in Okains Bay if you have stock, however, I am happy to order now and pick up whenever.
I could bring my plan if you have time and interest to advise.
    Thank you.
