REFUGEE SETTLEMENT TEAM – Great news! I have been accepted by the Red Cross as a volunteer with their Refugee Settlement Team. I will be supporting people from the Horn of Africa who arrive in Christchurch in early October.
As you are aware, people fleeing war, famine and persecution have few possessions, so when setting up a home in our beautiful city, they will need a range of homewares and pantry items to provide a comfortable safe environment for their families.
I invite you to join me in welcoming these newcomers to New Zealand by contributing any surplus items you have from the attached list. I can be contacted in 0272750733 to arrange collection. You can also help by spreading the word and forwarding this email to your family and friends.

Safely dispose of unwanted batteries
Wanting to dispose of unwanted batteries safely? Check out the Christchurch City Council’s free battery recycling scheme available from 13 May 2019.
Why recycle batteries?
Batteries contain numerous components that are bad for the environment. If put in wheelie bins, batteries can potentially harm staff and members of the public. Batteries deteriorate if not in use and can become hazardous. Collecting batteries before they deteriorate means they can be recycled appropriately, saving valuable components for reuse and reducing the risk to people and the environment.

LOCAL WALKS – Little River has a number of local walks for you to enjoy. On a hot day walk in the shade up the Montgomery Track, or a shorter walk under the canopy of regenerating bush in the Okuti Valley Scenic Reserve.
More exposed walks are the Hilltop Hike from Okuti Valley Reserve to French Peak, Saddle Hill and the Te Oka Bay Walk downhill from Bossu Road. The Rail Trail can be hiked or biked in stages and a nice evening stroll would take you from Little River township to the Little River Hotel for a meal. An enjoyable evening out.

SWIMMING – Keys to the Little River School Swimming Pool are available to anyone in the Community and can be purchased from the School Office for $60.00 plus a $20 bond. email office@littleriver.school.nz or phone 3251 004.
REPORTING ISSUES TO THE COUNCIL – There are a number of ways to do this. Go to the CCC Report Section here You can continue to lodge issues by calling Council on (03) 941 8999, or visiting one of our Service centres.(external link)
or Report issues to Council from your mobile phone with the Snap Send and Solve Smartphone app.
The Snap Send Solve app works by identifying the location the photo is taken using the phone’s GPS data. It sends an email to the Council from your email address, including the incident type, notes, address of incident, photo, and contact details.
The report is then allocated to the relevant Council department. The more information provided, the better we can help isolate and investigate the issue.

WASTE PREVENTION BANKS PENINSULA – has a Facebook Page. Go HERE to read all the latest tips. Waste Prevention Banks Peninsula is a closed group whereby BP residents can find out more about the soft plastics recycling trial, but more importantly how to work on reducing plastics all together. Run by waste prevention educator and Little River resident Sharon McIver from Our Daily Waste, this will be a space for people to ask questions and show off their own waste prevention tips and successes.

MILLION METRES STREAMS PROJECT – Million
Metres is an online fundraising platform. We raise money for restoring the Banks of New Zealand’s waterways. Our goal is to raise funds to plant one million metres of waterways with native plants and trees. The initiative is led by the Sustainable Business Network, in partnership with the Department of Conservation. The new Little River 20181 Local phone directory is out. This year the proceeds
go to the Little River Support group for People with Cancer here in Little River, that covers the area from the Hill Top to Kaituna. We are a group of volunteers that generate funds locally for residents who may have cancer.
We have a small fund which is available to provide some financial support for people with cancer or undergoing treatment by way of donations for petrol, meals and other needs. Inquiries to Fiona Waghorn 3290171 or waggie@xtra.co.nz. Please note we are not part of the Cancer Society their helpline is 0800 226 237. However we are always looking for volunteers on Daffodil Day (end of August) to make marmalade and help on our stall in Little River.
The Directories are $10 and are available from the Little River Service Centre and the Craft Station for $10.

DOUBLE DUTCH – Karin Bos and Tineke van de Heide are living the dream on Banks Peninsula. The registered nurses, originally from the Netherlands, are also volunteer firefighters at the Little River brigade, they breed horses and run a market garden that provides seasonable vegetables for the local community.

Little River Growers – are you interested in joining the Akaroa Farmers Market?
The Akaroa Farmers Market is open October to April every Saturday morning from 9.30 to 1pm in the Madeira Hotel car park in Akaroa. You can go every week or intermittent days depending on what produce you have available.
Minimal charge is 10% of your takings up to a maximum of $20. Currently this charge goes back into the Akaroa community via Heartlands. If Little River area joins then they will discuss letting the money from this group come back to our community.
You can share tables if there are a few of you who have small amounts, which would decrease your travel and time.
There are tables and chairs available for customers to sit and eat if they wish. At the moment there are crepes and white bait patties. An example of things sold is olives, smoked salmon, seasonal vegges, pickles.

ves a complete overview of all the walks available on Banks Peninsula.
A hard copy reference book with the same information and three brochures giving details of walks in the Akaroa area. This is the first time that all the information on walks on Banks Peninsula is available to walkers in one place and we are all extremely grateful to Suky Thompson and the Rod Donald Trust for this huge undertaking. You can purchase individual copies of the brochures, an A4 size copy of the reference book or view a large copy of the Reference Book at the Little River Visitor Centre located in the Waiting Room of the Little River Railway Station.
